Practice
green swimming
pool policies
In the hospitality industry, practicing environmentally sensitive policies in the running and maintenance of swimming pools and spas is two-fold: it is socially responsible and makes smart business sense, too. Green solutions available in the maintenance of pools and spas reduces costs from the moment installation is complete, and many of these solutions cost no more than less-efficient versions yet do not compromise quality. Green solutions, which are defined as saving water by the reduction of evaporation, energy savings, and reduction of pollutants, are all also environmentally helpful goals.
While there may be an initial investment to upgrade or add equipment, some initiatives, such as solar heating, can reduce energy bills significantly and can enjoy a return on investment in as fast as one to two years.
If marketed correctly, an additional advantage to those who switch to green products will distinguish themselves from the competition—consumers have great brand loyalty for businesses that champion environmental causes.
Here are some examples of how the hotel industry can achieve both goals—reduce expenses and improve the environment: read more....

Use pool
safety
compliance as a
marketing tool
For hoteliers,
the perception
of the Virginia
Graeme Baker
Pool and Spa
Safety Act is
just another
expense foisted
on an already
beleaguered
industry.
Bringing pools
and spas up to
code can cost
anywhere from
$1,300 to
$3,500,
depending on
work required.
The threat
hanging over the
hotel industry’s
head is pool
closure and
massive fines.
Well, why not
spin this to
your advantage?
Think of the act
as your moment
to make safety
the cornerstone
of a guest's
stay—a way for
the hospitality
industry to
uphold the law
while also
demonstrating
its commitment
to protecting
children and
families.
Indeed, no other
industry reaches
as many
people—hotels
and motels are
destinations for
an incredibly
diverse group of
individuals—and
this fact is an
invitation to
strengthen (or
initiate)
relationships
with guests who
value this
emphasis on
quality and
safety.
Use your
compliance with
VGBA as a “soft
marketing”
point. Add a
simple statement
to your
advertisements,
placards at the
front desk or
signage at the
pool and spa:
“This property
is in compliance
with the
Virginia Pool
and Spa Safety
Act. It is our
No. 1 priority
to make your
stay with us a
safe one.”
Commercial pools
already post
required
signage, such as
the “no
lifeguard on
duty” or
“maximum
occupancy.” Here
is an
opportunity to
make safety the
first and most
important
message guests
see.

Plastering (www.gardnerpoolplastering.com),
the premier resource in
Southern California for
residential and commercial
pool remodeling, encourages
apartment residents and

Gardner Seal of Approval
sign concerning pools that

Safety Act (VGBA). This sign
confirms that a public pool
or spa has the
anti-entrapment drainage
covers required by the Act,
thanks to Gardner's expert

"The Gardner Seal of
Approval is a permanent
sign, clearly posted for
people to see, that
underscores our customers'
commitment to public
safety," says Scott McKenna,
CEO of Gardner Pool
Plastering. "This sign
provides necessary peace of
mind for parents and
travelers who want to use a
pool that fulfills the
intent of this landmark
legislation. Property
managers or hoteliers who
display the Gardner Seal of
Approval also do themselves
a favor by showcasing their
emphasis on going the extra
mile for residents or guests
who deserve the very best
use of a pool or spa."
This sign, about 24" x
18" in waterproof PVC, is
only displayed if the pool
or spa has been brought up
to code per the requirements
of the Act, inspected by a
County Health Department
Inspector and the required
permits have been signed
off.
"Our work stands in stark
contrast to the thousands of
pools that have the wrong
drainage covers, a safety
hazard that can result in
serious injury or even
death. The Gardner Seal of
Approval is the public's
insurance policy against
these threats," says Mr.
McKenna.
"We want to help
potential customers who are
at risk of receiving
millions of dollars in fines
and massive lawsuits, all
because of non-compliance
with the Act. Additionally,
we want to educate these
same customers about the
too-good-to-be-true promises
of inexperienced technicians
who are unable to address
the importance of safety.
Hence the power of the
Gardner Seal of Approval:
uncompromised safety."

assignments we receive are a
testament to our long-term

professionals enjoy this
same level of respect,
because we always emphasize
quality as a first priority
for everything we do. From

principle is at the heart of
our efforts for VGBA-related

Pool and Spa News: Still
Not Enough Pool and Spa
Safety Act Enforcement
Mike Stinson, who owns the "Mike the Poolman" shop in Folsom,
California, was quoted
in a new Pool and Spa
News story on compliance
with the Virginia Graeme
Baker Pool and Spa
Safety Act as saying:
“Many, many pool owners
are doing nothing...
They’re calling the
bluff of the inspectors
because they’ve heard
there aren’t enough
[personnel] to go
around.”
The entire story can be
read here:
www.poolspanews.com/2009/091/091n_vgb.html
This is just the latest evidence that enforcement of the
important, life-saving
law has been lax at
best. The inspectors are
simply not doing their
job, and they are
putting lives at risk at
as a result. How many
entrapment accidents --
and deaths -- are we
going to see before that
changes?

06/19/09 - Keeping Valley Pools Safe for
Children
By Mike Daniels, News Channel 3 Reporter
PALM SPRINGS - As the summer continues
more and more kids will be hopping into
resort pools.
Some of these resorts have lifeguards
while others don't. Some because of the
tough economic times.
On
Wednesday night, John Cahalan pulled a
small boy from the Spa Resort pool in
Palm Springs.
"I
just went in with my clothes on and
reached in and grabbed him," Chalan
recalled to us his harrowing experience.
"I lifted him as high as I could over my
head."
As
of right now, the resort doesn't have
lifeguards.
The same thing happened a little over a
month ago at the Rancho Las Palmas
Resort. An on-duty lifeguard saved a
child.
Brad Ouellette of Rancho Las Palmas says
the fact that a lifeguard is there is
the reason families come to stay.
"They feel safe when they're here, so
they can relax," says Ouellete.
But when is a lifeguard needed?
not all resorts have lifeguards. Some
think it's the parents responsibility.

05/04/09 - Federal
pool safety law can't be enforced without
state endorsement
(see
full story here)
A new
federal law that could save lives went into
effect in December, but Inland officials
don't have the authority to enforce it.
The
Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety
Act requires that public pools have updated
safety devices that could prevent drowning.
Backyard pools and spas at single-family
homes are not affected.
The
law is named after the 7-year-old
granddaughter of former Secretary of State
James Baker III. The child, who was known by
her middle name, Graeme, drowned in a spa in
2002 when she was sucked against the inlet
that led to the spa's filter system.
Rescuers tried unsuccessfully to pull her
free of the inlet that held her under water.
"We
are talking a major safety issue," said
Robin James, a Riverside County supervising
environmental health specialist.
Until
the state passes legislation supporting the
federal law, Inland officials say their
hands are tied. |

Sinking
Feeling for Pool Owners
A new federal law with the goal of reducing
the number of deaths by drowning nationwide
has created confusion and uncertainty among
property owners, aquatic facility operators
and pool construction and maintenance firms.
The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa
Safety Act was signed into federal law on
Dec. 20, 2007 and gave those responsible for
commercial-use pools just one year to be in
compliance.
