About Gardner Pool Plastering

Founded in San Diego in 1969, Gardner Pool Plastering Co., Inc., is family owned by San Diegans and has been serving Southern California for 40 years.  We have been a member of the San Diego Better Business Bureau since 1995.  Through 2006, the company has plastered over 30,000 pools and the company’s reputation for quality, service, expertise and integrity is second to none.

From the smallest details to the largest, most difficult projects, Gardner has consistently been the preferred supplier of pool plastering in Southern California.  Every project Gardner undertakes meets the same strict standards developed over years of providing unparalleled service to the company’s many customers.

Gardner is different from other plastering companies.  It is our firm belief that there is no equivalent level of service and expertise available from any of our competitors.  Every person working on your project is a well-trained, fully insured Gardner employee or Gardner affiliate.  We are dedicated to the proposition that quality will never be sacrificed.  We will never compromise on the basic levels of integrity to which we have committed.

In selecting a firm to do the work on your pool there are several factors to consider:

1.      How long has the company been in business in my community? Over the years, the pool industry and plastering industry have been very volatile.  Each year, companies come and go. You want to feel confident that the company you’re dealing with will be there to finish the job and still be there in five years if you have a problem.

2.      Is the company a licensed contractor and are there any unresolved complaints against the company?  An unrelated lawsuit could interrupt the work on your project, leave it partially done and possibly tie up your property in a law suit.  You can check unresolved complaints against a company by visiting, ww.BBB.org.

3.      Is the company properly insured?  They should be able to exhibit current coverage of both liability insurance and workman’s compensation.  You don’t want to be involved in an action over an accident that occurred on your property.

4.      Will the company furnish you with a list of references?  Satisfied customers are the best advertising a company can have.

5.      Do they stand behind their work?  Construction projects of any sort will occasionally generate problems.  Careful attention and prompt response to any problem that might arise is the mark of a quality installer.

6.      Who do the swimming pool construction companies use or recommend for their plastering and remodeling needs? They are in the best position to know if the company is dependable and truly stands behind their work.

HEADQUARTERS:

Scott McKenna - C.E.O.

Scott McKenna - C.E.O.

Scott got his start in the pool industry at the age of 24 working for California Pools, a pool builder, digging ditches for plumbing.  Over the years, he slowly moved up in the business and became a superintendant. After working for them for 4 years, he opened, with his father and brother, his own pool construction company called Trimac Pools.  They built high-end pools in the San Diego area.  Having decided to stay in the industry but to change focus slightly from building pools to remodeling them, they bought Gardner Pool Plastering.  His dad passed away 2 years ago this past January. Over the years, they built up Gardner from a small plastering company to a complete remodeling business with three branches in Southern California.

Personal Touch:  Scott has been playing basketball 3 days a week at 4:30 in the morning for 25 years.

Mike McKenna - V.P. Plaster/Construction Manager

Mike McKenna - V.P. Plaster/Construction Manager

Mike started working out of High School building swimming pools.  (If you would like to read about the first pool he almost built on the Football field in San Marino H.S., click Our Story.) Mike began his career working for Pacific Custom Pools, traveling the United States building water theme amusement parks – his first park was right here in Southern California; Raging Waters.  Started Trimac Pools with his dad and brother building high-end pool in San Diego area and co-bought Gardner Pool Plastering with his family.

Personal Touch:  Aside for building pools, Mike is a late starter in some ways: he is learning to play the piano at 56 and was recently married at 54.

Tom Cox - Vice-President

Tom Cox - Vice-President

Tom has been self-employed all his life in landscape maintenance and direct sales companies. He was hired at Gardner Pool Plastering because of his business/people/management experience and has been in the industry for 6 1/2 years. Tom’s current role comprises several “hats” as Vice President, General Manager and Sales Manager.  The buck certainly stops at Tom’s desk.

Personal Touch:  Tom has been married for 19 years and has 2 healthy children, a boy and a girl. He is currently training for an Ironman distance triathlon in 2010 for when he turns 50.

Josh Owsley - General Manager

Josh was born for construction work, nearly working at it his entire career.  As an excavating contractor, he can run most anything with a motor; from a chainsaw to a 180,000 lb Bulldozer.  He started with Gardner Pool Plastering mixing plaster when the team was plastering pools, he moved to service (since he can fix practically anything) and finally opened and running the Palm Springs area branch.  Josh has been successfully running this branch ever since.

Mark Feldstein - CFO & Director of Marketing

Mark has been working since he was 15 years old.  At 24, he became a very young Chief Financial Officer; working in industries including business furniture, shrimp processing and, finally, the pool Remodeling business for the past 5 years. In addition, Mark serves as Director of Marketing for Gardner Pool Plastering.  Although Mark’s original career path was intended to become a Hollywood writer (a far cry from accounting), he currently uses those creative skills when wearing his marketing “hat”.

Personal touch:  Mark has been married since 1986 and is the proud father of a 20 year old daughter currently attending Fullerton College. Mark attributes his creative side to his dad, Al Feldstein, the creator and editor (for 29 years) of Mad Magazine.  Growing up in the Feldstein household usually consisted of Mark telling a joke and his dad editing it to make it funnier.

Mike Yeakel - Operations Manager

Mike Yeakel - Operations Manager

Mike has unusual origins.  His mother was a well-known actress in her day and best friends with Frank Sinatra’s wife, Barbara. Because of this,  Mike grew up with the infamous Rat Pack.  As a kid, he made spaghetti and meatballs for Ol’ Blue Eyes in Frank’s kitchen.  At 9 years old, Mike began his non-culinary career picking up lumber on job sites for his step-father who was in the construction field.  He has been working in construction ever since (partially because his mother never wanted Mike to get involved in the film industry.)  Mike later worked for a concrete construction company where he learned architectural design hardscape.  Years later he made the switch to pool remodeling. Today, Mike is one of the top concrete hardscape contractors in the country.

Personal note:  Mike trained in Le Cordon Bleu in San Francisco as a chef.
